How to Create your Home Colour Palette

Are you ready to renovate your home? Choosing a colour pallet is one of the most important choices you need to make when remodelling. The colours you pick set the mood and tone throughout your house. To ensure the colours flow from room to room, you can try using the colours in different ways in separate rooms. Whether you keep the colour pallet neutral or add bold shades, make sure it’s timeless and appealing! Follow these colour tips to create your palette!

Make a list of the elements that won’t be changing.

These are items that will be staying as is during your renovation. These colours are non-negotiable and will be in your colour palette. If you aren’t planning on painting the walls, changing the flooring, or replacing the countertops, make a list of these colours and work around them, ensuring the colours you pick complement these elements.

Pick a mood for your house and build a colour palette around it.

Picking a mood for your home is very important when creating your colour palette. If you want it loud and happy, you’ll want to choose a colour that reflects happiness, such as yellow. If you want a more romantic mood selecting a colour such as red would be an excellent choice. Choosing a soft colour such as blue would add calmness to your home. These colours will help develop your colour scheme.

Choose your neutral colours

When choosing neutral colours, you’ll want to pick out whites (there are various shades of white with different undertones, so choose wisely, they all look different once painted). You’ll also need neutral colours to connect each room and to make your home cohesive. You’ll pick cool or warm neutral tones depending on your colour palette.

Have an accent colour

Your accent colours will be used sporadically throughout your home and will tie into the mood you want to set. These colours can be used in furniture and decorations (such as pictures, ornaments, trims, etc.).

Here are some colour pallets we used in our client’s homes:

We wanted the mood to be comfortable and happy in this beautiful family home in Langley. So we incorporated bold colours such as blue for comfort and a chartreuse (yellow-green mix) for happiness. The neutrals we chose were shades of grey, browns (cabinetry), and white!

This Surrey home is a perfect example of how playing with different shades of neutral tones (whites, browns, and greys) can make your home feel spacious and clean. The mood was brought through the earth elements strategically placed within the home - items such as plants and wooden textures brought in the sense of peacefulness and tranquillity. In the kitchen, white was the primary colour, and the wood was the accent colour, whereas, in the bathroom, the roles reversed, and the wood became the primary colour and the white the accent colour. This is an excellent example of using your colors palettes in different ways while staying cohesive.
